Accused Murderer Says Barry White's Voice and Olivia Newton-John's Body Made Him Do It

Maureen O'Connor · 02/21/12 01:58PM

As the murder trial of Decatur, Georgia's Hemy Neuman wraps up, we discover that Neuman admits he shot Russell Sneiderman outside the man's 2-year-old son's preschool. His lawyers say he should be found not guilty by reason of insanity because "he was visited by a demon who sounded like Barry White and an angel who looked like Olivia Newton-John before he shot and killed a toddler's father outside a preschool." Prosecutors says Hemy's motive was jealousy. [AP]

How the Montauk Grifter Infiltrated the World of Hell's Kitchen

John Cook · 02/17/12 03:13PM

Mystery solved, sort of: It seems reasonably clear to me that Daniel Kaufman, a.k.a., Dan Kay, a.k.a. Dan Katze, a.k.a. the Busted Chef, a.k.a. the Montauk Grifter, never actually worked as a producer on Hell's Kitchen, as he repeatedly claimed to the people he conned. But he definitely managed to convince several of the show's former contestants that he worked there, which is some fairly acrobatic grifting.

It Looks Like the Montauk Grifter Conned Gordon Ramsay, Too

John Cook · 02/15/12 03:55PM

Yesterday, we brought you the tale of Daniel Kaufman, a.k.a. Dan Kay, a.k.a. Dan Katze, the preternaturally prolific conman who told his victims, among many other things, that he was a world-class chef and a producer on Hell's Kitchen and Chopped—even though he can't cook. Since then, we've learned that he probably did manage to grift his way onto Hell's Kitchen. Also: We've gotten tons of emails from people who have crossed Dan's path, which we've published below.

The Montauk Grifter: How One Con Man Used OkCupid for Fun, Fraud, and Profit

John Cook · 02/14/12 03:55PM

He is Dan Kaufman, Dan Kay, Dan Katze. He is a celebrity chef, an internet entrepreneur, a television producer. He has worked for Apple, Google, AOL, the Rainbow Room. He hangs out with Steve Case, Gordon Ramsey, Tim Armstrong. He's a world-class surfer, a AAA baseball legend, the founder of a seminal punk band. He's one of the more persistent and obsessive grifters to ply the streets of New York City—not to mention online dating sites—in recent decades.

Masked men wielding machetes robbed Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and his wife this past week at their vacation home on the Island of Nevis. About $1,000 was taken in the attempt, and nobody was hurt. An arrest has yet to be made.

No, We Don't Have to Forgive Chris Brown

Louis Peitzman · 02/12/12 12:39PM

I don't have much to add to this piece by Sasha Pasulka, "I'm Not Okay With Chris Brown Performing at the Grammys and I'm Not Sure Why You Are." But the internet is abuzz with reaction, and I do think it's worthy of discussion — even if I completely agree with the author.

Killer Clown Probably Had Help

Louis Peitzman · 02/11/12 12:42PM

Hey, nothing to worry about, but remember John Wayne Gacy, that serial killer who dressed like a clown and performed at kids' birthdays? Two Chicago lawyers are now saying he might have had three accomplices — two of whom are still alive. No word on whether or not these men also wore clown makeup, but for the sake of my sanity, I'll assume that was just Gacy's thing.

Why Has The New York Post Been So Extremely Nice to Greg Kelly?

Hamilton Nolan · 02/09/12 10:47AM

Greg Kelly, NYC Fox News anchor and son of police commissioner Ray Kelly, is off the hook on rape charges after police decided that his accuser actually had a consensual encounter with him, then changed her story when her boyfriend found out. Fine. Only Kelly and the woman really know what happened. But why is the New York Post such an extremely gleeful Greg Kelly defender?

Nicest Kidnappers Ever Served Tea, Dried Fruit

Louis Peitzman · 02/04/12 05:48PM

If you're going to get kidnapped, do your best to get kidnapped by these guys: an armed group of Bedouin tribesmen held two California women captive for a few hours, during which time they served up food and good conversation. Seriously. The AP story makes these guys sound like people I would hang out with willingly.

Ryan Tate · 02/02/12 04:43PM

The Antarctic region is losing its glaciers to global warming, but now comes evidence humans are helping erode the ice masses in a more direct way: Chilean authorities arrested an entrepreneur for making off with five and a half tons of the Jorge Montt glacier in Patagonia.

FBI Chainsaws Wrong Door, Holds Wrong Woman At Gunpoint

Ryan Tate · 02/02/12 10:09AM

FBI agents swarmed a Fitchburg, Massachusetts woman's apartment, chainsawed a hole in her door — apparently that's how cops bust their way into homes now? — and held her and her daughter on the ground at gunpoint for 35 minutes. While the federal agents were going apeshit on apartment 2R, the actual guy they were after was sauntering out of apartment 2F.
