Marc Jacobs: Engaged!

cityfile · 03/18/09 03:25PM

It's been rumored for ages, but now it appears to be official: Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone are engaged. Women's Wear Daily reports the duo will go public with the news tomorrow when they arrive in Brazil "wearing rings." Then they'll head to Martone's hometown of Sao Paolo for a "fete celebrating the Marc Jacobs multibrand store." (You didn't expect the big news to get in the way of business, did you?) Jacobs and Martone haven't set a date for the wedding yet. But count on it being the chicest gay wedding of all time and starting about two hours late. [WWD]

Paging Dr. Bloomberg

cityfile · 03/18/09 01:59PM

If you found it heartwarming to hear that Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler is now personally fighting crime, you'll be extra pleased to hear that Michael Bloomberg has expanded his role as mayor and has started saving lives. The Mayor rushed to the side of a Lehman College student who fainted during a news conference this morning, and led the effort to revive him by searching for a pulse, unbuttoning his shirt, and trying to get the boy to keep talking until paramedics arrived. No word on what kind of emergency preparedness courses they're taking over there at City Hall these days, but if Patti Harris manages to save a child from a burning building next week, we're really going to start getting suspicious. Fire Sale at AIG

cityfile · 03/18/09 01:02PM

Can we interest you in an office building in the financial district? The most despised company in America, AIG, is now looking to unload its 66-story Art Deco tower at 70 Pine Street and has tapped star commercial broker Darcy Stacom to handle the deal. Unfortunately, the building isn't expected to go for much more than $100 million, a far cry from what the company could have made a few months ago when it was worth $300 million or more. Presumably the price will continue to drop as time passes (and the company has to figure out how to pay for the next round of employee bonuses). In the meantime, you could always pick up 70 Pine at a real bargain and go for a pewter version for $150. [NYP]

Guess Who's Coming to NYC?

cityfile · 03/18/09 12:40PM

Bobby Jindal isn't officially running for president in 2012. But he sure isn't wasting any time filling up his campaign coffers. We're pleased to share with you this invite that went out to top NYC Republican donors this week, promising "cocktails and conversation" with the Republican governor of Louisiana at Georgette Mosbacher's Fifth Avenue apartment on April 15. For just $1,000 a person. (Or $2,000 if you're spending corporate money.) A larger scan of the invite is here.

The Grueling Challenges of Weekend Dressing

cityfile · 03/18/09 11:37AM

No one would ever underestimate the myriad stresses and strains of working in fashion: Not only are you carrying the awesome responsibility of making pretty clothes, you also have no choice but to be impeccably groomed at all times. But those glossy women who labor so indefatigably on all of our behalfs have a further cross to bear, one they've been stoically silent about—until now! As W reports, the likes of Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, and Charlotte Ronson all deal with the absolute minefield of what to wear on the weekends, when they may need to take a well-earned rest from getting decked out in high-end labels, but must do so without disgracing themselves and their noble yet viciously judgmental industry.

Nothing's Gonna Get Jeff Zucker Down

cityfile · 03/18/09 11:10AM

• NBC chief Jeff Zucker says that despite the fact Jim Cramer got his ass handed to him last week by Jon Stewart, it's had absolutely no impact on CNBC. Believe that and you may also be willing to buy that everything's perfect at MSNBC and NBC, and Zucker has a perfect head of hair, too. [Portfolio, B&C]
• Crain Communications has cut 150 staffers and sliced salaries by 10%. [PC]
• Don Hewitt, the creator of 60 Minutes, is in the hospital with cancer. [Wow]

What You've Been Missing on Capitol Hill Today

cityfile · 03/18/09 10:35AM

A little progress has been made in Washington, believe it or not! In case you haven't spent the last four hours watching testimony in front of the Congressional committee looking into the AIG mess, you may be happy to hear that the insurance company's CEO, Ed Liddy, says he's asked the AIG employees who collected big bonuses to give half the money back. Okay, so it means we're only 50 percent of the way closer to a solution to this saga. But Liddy says that some employees have already agreed to the arrangement. And some really generous ones have even offered to give up all the cash!

A-Rod Loses Out at 15 CPW

cityfile · 03/18/09 10:13AM

It looks like Alex Rodriguez's prowess on the baseball field doesn't extend to the real estate market. The Yankees third baseman, who struggled to unload his Trump Park Avenue condo and has yet to find a buyer for his Coral Gables manse, failed to get his first choice when it came time to rent an apartment at 15 Central Park West, too. Financier Henry Silverman and his much-younger girlfriend ended up snatching the $40,000-a-month, three-bedroom pad A-Rod wanted at the last minute, so he's since been forced to suffer the indignity of renting the smaller $30,000-a-month condo next door instead. And he couldn't even negotiate a discount! Poor thing. [NYO]

FiDi, Greenpoint Could Really Use a Sitcom

cityfile · 03/18/09 09:37AM

This map of where famous sitcoms were set—on TV, that is, not in real life—isn't the most precise thing in the world. (We're going to assume the placement of Sex and the City on the Upper East Side is because Charlotte's character lived there?) But if you're a TV location scout and you're looking to showcase an NYC neighborhood that has yet to be ruined by round-the-clock shoots and national TV exposure, it should be a good place to start. Tricia Walsh-Smith Will Take Your Mind Off Your Troubles

cityfile · 03/18/09 09:09AM

Tricia Walsh-Smith's 15 minutes were up many moons ago. And yet we still can't help but watch the clips the spurned divorcée sends our way, which may be because if given the choice between another angry hearing about how a financial conglomerate managed to hoodwink taxpayers and video of a half-drunk, fortysomething British woman prancing around a pool in a bikini, we'll go for the latter any day. Tricia's latest (and possibly greatest) is above in the event you're in need of a little laugh today.

Graydon Carter's 'Architecture Consultant' in Jeopardy

cityfile · 03/18/09 08:45AM

These are difficult times for Condé Nast. AdAge reported yesterday the publishing giant is planning to slash the ad sales group managed by Richard Beckman; today, Keith Kelly of the Post reports some of the company's flagship titles have seen a 30 to 40 percent decline in revenues, and the company has "taken a dagger to its corporate pension plan" in order to reduce costs. Meanwhile, the Observer's John Koblin reports chairman Si Newhouse and CEO Chuck Townsend have asked editors to trim their discretionary budgets (which includes items like messengers, first-class airfare, and car services), and says a broader round of job cuts is inevitable. Of course, it's hard for any editor to trim his or her own staff—and it can be difficult for top execs to take a step back and see the absurd spending when they're so close to it.

Disgraced Exec's Penthouse Hits the Market

cityfile · 03/18/09 07:38AM

• Former Refco chief Phillip Bennett's penthouse duplex at 1001 Park Avenue (left), which became the property of the U.S. government after Bennett pleaded guilty to bank fraud, conspiracy, money laundering and was sentenced to 16 years in prison, has gone on the market for $5.9 million. [NYO, PDE]
• Martin Payson, a former vice chairman of Time Warner, and his wife Doris, have paid $5 million for a 10th-floor condo at 170 East End Avenue. [Cityfile]
• Andy Warhol muse Jane Holzer has gone into contract to sell her apartment at 23 East 74th Street. The five-bedroom spread, which went on the market for $22.5 million last June, had most recently been listed at $16.9 million. [NYO]

Another Madoff Figure Goes Down

cityfile · 03/18/09 07:30AM

It looks like Bernie Madoff's sketchy accountant is going to be the next person to go down in connection with the scheme. The Journal is now reporting that David Friehling has been charged with securities fraud, aiding and abetting investment adviser fraud and four counts of filing false audit reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He faces 105 years in prison if he's convicted on all of the charges and is expected to be arraigned in federal court later today. [WSJ]

Natasha Richardson's Family Gathers to Say Goodbye

cityfile · 03/18/09 06:31AM

• Following conflicting news reports, it now appears that Natasha Richardson was pronounced brain dead sometime yesterday following her skiing accident in Canada on Monday. She's now reported to be at Lenox Hill on the Upper East Side, where her family members have gathered to hold a vigil and say goodbye. [NYP, People, NYT]

Three AIG Execs Outed

cityfile · 03/18/09 06:15AM

Given how much anger has been stirred up by the bonus debacle at AIG, it was only a matter of time before some previously anonymous exec at the insurance giant walked out his front door to find a reporter and photographer standing in his driveway. The Post uncovered a few names yesterday and then headed up to Connecticut to, you know, say hello and ask a few questions. None of the three—James Haas (left), Douglas Poling, and Jonathan Liebergall—were willing to say much, not surprisingly, although AIG may end up making a few extra bucks out of the saga: Considering they've now been publicly identified, we're guessing all three will be looking to take out much more generous life insurance policies today.
