TimesSelect Not That Interested in Your Money

Bucky Turco, who has a habit of running into shit in the city and taking pictures of them, is apparently now finding random shit online and taking screenshots of them. This weekend, he got himself something New Yorkers covet as much as walk-in closets and Derek Jeter's manhood, a free New York Times TimesSelect membership.

'Times' Trying To Convince You That Frank Rich Is Roughly Comparable To Bob Woodward

abalk2 · 10/19/06 01:30PM

Fall has always been the busy season in publishing, with its inevitable crush of titles scrambling for attention and a toehold in bookstores, but at no time in recent memory has there been such a traffic jam of big-name authors unleashing top-drawer books. Already, the October best-seller lists read like a who's who: Mitch Albom, Bob Woodward, Frank Rich, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, John le Carr , Cormac McCarthy, Charles Frazier and Janet Evanovich. In coming weeks, they are likely to be joined by literary rock stars like Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Richard Ford, Thomas Harris and Thomas Pynchon.

'NYT' Shocked, Shocked at Lack of Shock

Chris Mohney · 10/19/06 11:50AM

The Amish schoolhouse shootings can be appreciated on so many levels. There's the murder thing, and the child-killing thing, and the deranged maniac thing, and then the school violence thing. Plus you got the extra shock value from the violence happening in Amish country, which has a reputation as a rather peaceful place. So all in all: shocking. But if you're Bob Herbert at the New York Times, you can always find something else to be shocked about, and even more, you can be shocked that other people aren't as sufficiently shocked as you would prefer. Hence Herbert's "Why Aren't We Shocked?" from earlier this week — and by the way, the more we think about it, the more we like that headline as a sort of universal catch-all for angry finger-wagging journalism in general. Anyway, Herbert points out that the Amish shooting victims were all girls (boys and adults were released by the killer), and given the killer's apparent intent to molest/rape the girls, there's a misogyny angle that deserves equal, shockworthy coverage as well. Since this angle wasn't much discussed in mainstream media coverage of the shootings, Herbert is, of course, shocked.

I Say Potato, You Say Asparagus

You may have heard that Jingle All The Way star and Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger spent yesterday in the city, and according to the New York Times, Arnie and Mayor Mike are now totes BFF 4 eva.The parallels are easy to see - wealthy, moderate, even liberal by GOP standards, non-career politicians, etc etc. But what of this graphic the Times threw up on Sunday?

They Call Him Vice President McDreamy

sUKi · 10/17/06 10:30AM

A keen-eyed reader found an otherwise unremarkable photograph on the New York Times home page, of two adorable little girls posing outside Dick Cheney's Air Force Two, and noticed that the photographer, Dene Mosier, had the same last name as the girls, Grace and Gabrielle Mosier.

Media Bubble: Tripped Up

Tomorrow's 'NYT' Correction Today

abalk2 · 10/13/06 01:50PM

At left, the photo of Imperial Life in the Empire City author Rajiv Chandrasekaran as it appeared in today's New York Times. At right, an artist's conception of how the same item would have appeared had they actually, you know, used a photo of Imperial Life in the Empire City author Rajiv Chandrasekaran. Two questions: Anyone know who the other dude is? Also, anyone know who's doing the photo editing over at the NYT?

Once Again, Person With Penis In Charge of Telling Upper West Siders What to Think

abalk2 · 10/13/06 08:30AM

So Gail Collins, the first double-x chromosomed human to head up the NYTs editorial page, will be stepping down at the end of the year. She's gonna do the typical "book leave" thing and then return to the "nice lady" column slot previously inhabited by Anna Quindlen. (We're all for the idea of having two female op-ed columnists in the Times, if only to reduce the general feeling of dickishness induced by John Tierney.) Publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., described her tenure thusly:

"Okay dude fess up"

Nick Douglas · 10/11/06 10:37AM

Of course the headline is an obvious statement on the buck-passing execs and investigators at Hewlett-Packard over an allegedly fradulent leak investigation scandal, but am I the only one who wants these guys to get into a poking match?
