Man Charged in Brutal Stabbing Deaths of His Cousin-in-Law, 4 Children

The man accused of stabbing a family of five to death this weekend was charged with their murders Monday morning. Ming Dong Chen, a Chinese immigrant, allegedly killed his cousin’s wife and four children with a meat cleaver late Saturday night.
Chen, who has lived in the U.S. for 10 years, reportedly confessed to the crime, telling police that he resented the success of his cousin’s family, with whom he’d been staying for about eight days.
According to the NYPD, Chen’s cousin-in-law and eventual victim Qiao Zhen Li noticed Chen acting strangely Saturday and tried to contact her husband at work. When she couldn’t reach him, she called her mother-in-law in China, who contacted her daughter in Brooklyn. The daughter along with her husband went to Li’s house, where they discovered a horrible scene. From CBS New York:
“The sister arrives at the location with her husband and they bang on the door and they bang on the door,” At some point, [NYPD Chief of Department Philip] Banks said Chen “opens the door and they see that he’s covered in blood.”
Li and her four children were all found “cut and butchered with a kitchen knife,” according to Banks; three of Li's children, a 9-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, and a 17-month-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene, and Li and her 5-year-old son were taken to a nearby hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
“Horrific, horrific crime,” Banks said. “It’s a scene you’ll never forget.”
Li’s husband reportedly arrived at the precinct house early Sunday morning, after learning that his cousin had slaughtered his family.
"The father was freaking out," neighbor May Chan told the New York Daily News. "He just came home from work and saw the police and they told him. He was hysterical."
