Forget trying to actually understand what's going on with the economy, advises Cornell psychiatrist Richard Friedman—explanations from politicians and economists are only making us all freak out more! What the panicked populace needs is mass psychotherapy from government-mandated mental health professionals, who will tell us that everything's going to be just fine and that we should merrily spend and invest like we did in the good old days.

So what is the approach that the esteemed doctor has formulated based on his wealth of experience and knowledge? Basically, that we're treated like children scared of monsters under the bed: "You're afraid of heights, you climb higher and higher, you get exposed and you see nothing awful is going to happen to you. You're afraid the market is going to collapse, you go out and you spend money."

We could point out that the higher you climb, the more apparent it is that you will in all likelihood fall to a dramatic death, but other that that, the logic is faultless!
