The Recession Oils the Wheels of Your Dishonesty

When you talk to people who lived through the Great Depression, you hear about how everybody pulled together, how crime rates were low, and how moral values were not only upheld but strengthened. When we're in our twilight years and we look back on this era—assuming of course that the planet lasts that long—we'll be able to say the exact opposite.
Theft is rampant, designer shoes are somehow deemed more important than honesty, and worst of all, it now seems that our dire economy is actually being exploited, in the most mendacious fashion, by a rash of unprincipled individuals wishing to slide out of obligations while minimizing awkwardness. From firing unsatisfactory domestic staff to worming out of a marriage proposal, the recession is a gold-plated excuse for every occasion. Our last vestige of faith in humanity—destroyed!
