On Katie's Last Day, 'Times' Plays Greatest Hits, Too

From "Fan's Therapy: 'Today' and Yesterdays," by Lola Ogunnaike, today:
His name is Linny Boyette, and to die-hard fans of the "Today" show he is almost as familiar and beloved a face as Katie, Matt, Ann and Al. That is because Mr. Boyette, arguably the show's ultimate fan, has been standing in the audience outside the NBC Midtown studio every day for nearly 12 years, except Sundays and the rare sick day....
He begins his day at 3:30 a.m. with a shower and a shave. By 4:40 Mr. Boyette, who lives in the Bronx, is off to the train. He usually arrives in Midtown an hour later, and after a quick cup of tea, he heads over to 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where "Today" is taped....
Born in Jamaica and raised in both New York and London, Mr. Boyette, who is a retired United States Army man, speaks in a deep British accent, peppering his conversation with words like "bloke" and "telly."
From "The Real 'Today' Show Lineup: Katie, Matt and Linny," by Bethany R. Lye, June 12, 2005:
IT'S so early that pedestrians maneuver around the streets of Midtown oblivious to crosswalk signals, there's no wait for the nonfat macchiatos, and the bright lights of Broadway make for an artificial early sunrise. Still, Linny Boyette is standing in position at the northern edge of Rockefeller Plaza.
His skin is dark chocolate, his accent British, and his glasses thick-rimmed and military-style. His speech is flavored with words like telly, smashing and motorcar, and he is dressed from cap to shoes in black. His routine is simple: wake up at half past 3, get dressed, ride the subway into Manhattan from his apartment in the Bronx and wait.
Mr. Boyette, a 62-year-old retired military man, has parked himself outside the studio for "Today," the NBC morning program, every day save Sundays and sick days for more than a decade.
